About Us

Founded in 1991, the Indianapolis Zen Center has provided a place for zen practice and spiritual community in central Indiana for more than three decades. Our center welcomes practitioners of all backgrounds and experience levels, from those completely new to meditation to long-time students of Zen practice.

The Indianapolis Zen Center is part of the Kwan Um School of Zen, an international organization of more than one hundred Zen centers and groups founded by Zen Master Seung Sahn, the first Korean Zen Master to live and teach in the West.

In 2004, Lincoln Rhodes, JDPSN became the guiding teacher of the Indianapolis Zen Center. Lincoln became a student of Zen Master Seung Sahn in 1974 and helped found the Kwan Um School of Zen, along with several of its Zen Centers. He also served for many years as the abbot of Providence Zen Center, our home temple. Since moving to Indianapolis in 2012, he has led the center directly.

The Indianapolis Zen Center offers training in Zen meditation, formal retreats, teaching interviews, public dharma talks, and regular community practice. Our programs are open to everyone regardless of previous experience and are offered at no cost. Whether you are looking to begin a meditation practice or deepen an existing one, we provide a welcoming place for sincere practice, study, and connection.
